Mr. Steve Hayes is the Director of Bands for the Roanoke – Benson School District. Mr. Hayes graduated from Illinois State University in 1983 with a Bachelors of Music Education and a Bachelors of Science in Music Therapy. In 1999, he graduated from Saint Xavier’s University with a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership.

He began teaching in the Roanoke – Benson School District in the Fall of 1991. Since the 1991-92 school year, the R.B.H.S. Band department has increased from 24 members to current size of 93 members. Overall the Roanoke – Benson School District’s Band program has increased from 65 students to 250+ students.

Mr. Hayes plays saxophone in the Central Illinois Jazz Orchestra. From 1975 to 1978, Mr. Hayes played saxophone and clarinet in the 434th US Army Band and the 81st US Army Band. From 1978 to August 2001, Mr. Hayes was a member of the 144th Illinois Army National Guard Band. Mr. Hayes retired from the Illinois Army National Guard after 26 years of service at the rank of First Sergeant.

The Hayes family are active in supports of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

In the Spring of 2013, Mr. Hayes was selected as a quarter finalist for the Grammy Foundation Music Teacher of the Year award.

In March 2014, Mr. Hayes was selected as one of PBS 100 Digital Innovators in Education.
